How far should a septic system be from a private well?

Start with the 50-foot health baseline

CDC’s current well-water safety guidance says to locate a well at least 50 feet from septic tanks and at least 50 feet from septic leach fields. Dakiv treats that distance as a screening threshold because it comes from a national public-health source.

Do not turn the number into a universal permit rule. EPA explains that household onsite wastewater systems are regulated by states, tribes and local governments, and local programs set siting requirements based on site conditions and public-health protections.

Measure the right components

A property can have plenty of distance from the septic tank to the well but a much shorter distance from the drainfield to the well. Record both. The drainfield is where wastewater receives soil treatment after leaving the tank, so it needs its own measurement.

Use a survey, permitted site plan, installer drawing or a measured field sketch. If the exact wellhead, tank or absorption area is unknown, treat the distance as unknown rather than estimating to the nearest convenient landmark.

Why a local rule can be larger

Soil texture, groundwater conditions, slope, well construction, treatment technology and local source-water protections can all affect siting. Some jurisdictions distinguish between a tank, conventional absorption field, alternative treatment component, public supply well or private well.

The safe workflow is: run the 50-ft screen, locate the official local minimum, then use the stricter requirement when planning your lot.

• What minimum applies from the well to the septic tank?
• What minimum applies from the well to the drainfield or replacement area?
• Does the rule change for a drilled versus shallow well?
• Are there extra source-water, floodplain or coastal restrictions?
• Does an existing nonconforming system have different replacement rules?
